Comedian Discusses Serious Issue of Childhood Lead Poisoning

On April 17, 2016, the late-night comedian John Oliver took on the serious issue of childhood lead poisoning on his show. Though Mr. Oliver used the water contamination issue in Flint, Michigan to highlight the widespread damage of using outdated lead pipes, he also reminded his viewers that lead paint dust, located in millions of homes built before 1978, still remains the biggest threat to children. He described children in low-income families stuck in older, dangerous homes they cannot leave—like the plot to every horror movie ever made. Young children who don’t know better can also eat fallen paint chips, which taste sweet, but can cause devastating nervous system damage, delayed development and other health issues. Only this is a preventable horror and more serious efforts have to be made to protect children from a lifetime of damage from lead poisoning.
