Johnson & Johnson said yesterday that they will be pulling their power morcellators off the market.

This announcement comes in light of the rising concerns over the safety of the surgical tool. Earlier this month, the FDA held a two day panel to evaluate the risk of power morcellators spreading cancer.

A new study by Columbia University which was published in the Journal of American Medicine Association, revealed a frightening figure: 1 in every 368 women who undergo a hysterectomy had cancer that could be spread through morcellation. The previously accepted figure was 1 in 10,000.

The morcellator tool is very popular because it allows for the hysterectomy procedure to be laparoscopic, meaning the incisions are much smaller, lowering the risk of open surgery complications such as bleeding. It can also reduce recovery time post-surgery and leaves minimal scarring. However, using morcellators during the procedure can spread hard to detect uterine cancer throughout a woman’s body. The morcellator is a small blade used to cut uterine fibroids or uteri into smaller pieces to be removed through the small incisions. The slicing of tissue can release previously undiagnosed cancer.

The risk has become so high that Johnson & Johnson, easily the largest manufacturer of the morcellator tool holding a lion’s share of 72% of the market, has decided to step away from the potentially dangerous product. They announced a voluntary recall of the product from the market in a letter to their customers. Dr. James Barter, director of gynecologic oncology research at Holy Cross Hospital, said regarding J&J’s decision, “The message is…very clear. The message is that it’s just not worth it.”
