William F. Mulroney | Of Counsel
With over 35 years of experience as trial attorney, William Mulroney is a skilled, knowledgeable and very well-respected litigator, serving as a mentor to many of the firm’s younger lawyers.
He prides himself on “walking the whole road” with his clients: working to get the best possible results while ensuring all their questions and unique needs are addressed. Post-verdict or settlement, Mr. Mulroney continues to go beyond the call as he has helped clients set up trusts, work out deals with federal and state government agencies, and other negotiations to benefit his clients.
During his time at Ashcraft & Gerel, Mr. Mulroney has been involved in some of the firm’s most notable cases, arguing in front of the Maryland Court of Appeals, the District of Columbia Court of Appeals, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court. He has led cases in a broad range of practice areas, including construction and automobile accidents, workers’ compensation, asbestos litigation, medical malpractice, and serious personal injury cases. The legal acumen and personal tenacity he brings to these practice areas have contributed to the firm’s reputation for excellence.
Based in our Baltimore office, he is licensed to practice law in both Maryland and Washington, D.C.
Mr. Mulroney says the most rewarding part of his job is being able to offer help to those who genuinely need it.
In one memorable case of catastrophic medical malpractice injury, Mr. Mulroney represented the family of an extremely premature baby who was left after birth without life support in the newborn nursery, unmonitored, because the hospital staff assumed the baby would not survive.
But the child lay struggling to breathe in the crib for hours. By the time the nursing staff realized the mistake, the baby had suffered severe brain damage, rendering him with lifelong motor problems.
Mr. Mulroney obtained a large settlement for the family that now allowed the child a better quality of life. As part of the settlement process, Mr. Mulroney negotiated with the Maryland Attorney General’s office regarding very large outstanding medical bills. He also had set up a Medicare Set-Aside Trust, which allowed the family to utilize the settlement assets without losing their rights to receive state Medicaid benefits.
Mr. Mulroney attended Fordham University’s School of Law, graduating in 1975. Thereafter, he clerked for New York State Supreme Court Judge Mario Pittoni. In 1976, he accepted an offer from Ashcraft & Gerel, LLP and moved to the greater Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.
Outside the Courtroom
Mr. Mulroney is a frequent speaker at seminars sponsored by labor unions, and regularly attends the annual AFL-CIO conference, where he has presented a wide range of timely legal topics.
Additionally, Mr. Mulroney has served on the Board of Directors for The Summit School, a K-8 school that’s committed to addressing learning differences in a supportive, creative, and innovative environment, and currently serves on the board of the nonprofit AFL-CIO Community Services in Baltimore.
A talented singer-songwriter, Mr. Mulroney released his debut album “Second Wind” in 2004. When he finds the time, he still continues to perform at music venues in the D.C. area.
