Craig A. Brown | Senior Partner

With 26 years of practice devoted exclusively to defending the rights of accident victims inside and outside of the workplace, Craig Brown is a mainstay of Ashcraft & Gerel’s client-centered practice.

Mr. Brown was recently recognized by Best Lawyers in America as the 2017 Washington Metropolitan area’s “Lawyer of the Year” in the practice area of Workers’ Compensation Law – Claimants.  Best Lawyers in America is the oldest peer review guide to the legal profession and awards “Lawyer of the Year” recognition to individual attorneys with the highest overall peer-feedback for a specific practice area and geographic location. Only one lawyer is recognized as the “Lawyer of the Year” for each specialty and location.

A senior partner, Mr. Brown is a very active litigator in the areas of workers’ compensation, auto accidents, and other personal injury claims. He also mentors the firm’s junior attorneys, continuing Ashcraft & Gerel’s culture of dedication and care for individual clients. In so doing, Mr. Brown brings a penchant to persevere and a refusal to take “no” for an answer.

Mr. Brown joined the firm after a two-year clerkship with the Virginia Supreme Court, during which he gained invaluable insights into Virginia’s legal system.

In a case exemplifying Mr. Brown’s willingness to take on difficult challenges, he once represented a car salesman who was injured while driving to work in a dealership vehicle. Mr. Brown filed a workers’ compensation claim on the salesman’s behalf. Apparently peeved at his audacity, the dealership’s general manager called Mr. Brown to tell him, “Any fool knows your client’s accident is not covered under workers’ comp.”

The general manager would live to regret those words. Mr. Brown refused to be bowed and pursued the case all the way through the Court of Appeals of Virginia, winning every step of the way. The automobile sales industry was so unhappy with the result that it later lobbied the Virginia General Assembly to change this precedent-setting outcome.

In another case, Mr. Brown represented a deputy sheriff injured when his cruiser plunged off a cliff while in pursuit of suspected criminals. The tragic accident occurred because a contractor building a road failed to post warning signs that the roadway terminated abruptly at the cliff. The contractor’s insurer offered $3,000 to settle the case. Mr. Brown’s litigation skills helped secure the deputy a jury verdict in excess of $200,000.

Mr. Brown found his calling early in life.

As a teenager, he already knew he wanted to practice law. After securing his law degree, he was honored to serve as a law clerk with the Supreme Court of Virginia. During this time, he saw the ways in which the legal system could sometimes place individuals at a disadvantage against companies and insurers. Mr. Brown decided to dedicate his professional life to giving a voice to the people who needed it most. Ashcraft & Gerel’s culture and practice areas would allow him to do just that, and he’s been with our firm ever since his court clerkship ended.

Mr. Brown’s knowledge and experience in the area of workers’ compensation law are in high demand, as he lectures frequently to both legal and labor groups on the topic.
Mr. Brown has been married for 28 years, has four children and is active in his church.
