Ashcraft & Gerel Awards Annual Scholarships to Two Local Students
Our firm was pleased to recently present two post-secondary education scholarships to local students who are affiliated with unions in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan-area.
On Tuesday, July 23, 2013, Allen Lowe, Esq. and Lisa Sanders were honored to present the Lee C. Ashcraft Memorial/Washington, D.C. Building and Construction Trades Scholarship on behalf of Ashcraft & Gerel to Ms. Jacqueline Whipple, who is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in History and Anthropology at the University of Maryland. Ms. Whipple’s father is a member of PEPCO Local 1900 (IBEW).
The memorial scholarship was established to honor Mr. Ashcraft and his fellow attorneys’ commitment to the community. Each year, it is offered to Washington, D.C. building and construction trade and union members, or one of their family members, and provides a one-time grant of $5,000 to a hardworking and ambitious student.
On Tuesday, July 30, 2013, Mr. Lowe presented the Martin E. Gerel Memorial Union Scholarship to Mr. Sumit Dalsania of FELRA & UFCW Local 400, who is pursuing a M.D./Ph.D. at the University of Maryland.
Ashcraft & Gerel has always valued our connection with the Washington, D.C. labor movement, and established the Martin E. Gerel Memorial Union Scholarship more than 30 years ago in memory of our firm’s co-founder to honor this special relationship. Each year, this $5,000 scholarship is awarded to Washington, D.C. metropolitan-area union members and their families to help with the rising cost of education.
We congratulate this year’s winners, and are pleased to provide financial assistance to families coping with the extreme costs of higher education. These students will undoubtedly achieve great things, as have scholarship winners in years past, and we couldn’t be prouder to offer our support.
