Drew LaFramboise Presents on Dangers of Power Morcellation at National Seminar
On September 30, 2015, Ashcraft & Gerel attorney Drew LaFramboise presented before an audience of attorneys at a national seminar in New York City hosted by the American Association for Justice. Mr. LaFramboise’s presentation concerned the laparoscopic power morcellator surgical device, which has been the subject of controversy and grabbed national headlines over the past year. Mr. LaFramboise described the dangers of power morcellators, namely that these cutting tools, when used in hysterectomy and myomectomy procedures, carry the risk of spreading deadly cancer throughout the body of the patient.
Since the Food & Drug Administration issued a Safety Notification in April 2014, dozens of products lawsuits have been filed against the manufacturers of these devices, including medical device giant Ethicon, alleging the manufacturers’ liability for disseminating and spreading cancerous tissue. On October 1, 2015, the Judicial Panel on Multi-District Litigation presided over a hearing as to whether these federal lawsuits will be consolidated into a Multi-District Litigation.
